Our chosen work is 'Keep the Aspidistra Flying' by George Orwell
I have booked the small room upstairs in the Lewes Arms for Wednesday
the 11th of April from 7.30 onwards. The BBC have aired a dramatisation of the novel which is available on the iplayer here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00nw25z If this has expired and you would like to listen to it I have made an mp3 recording. There are a few copies available in the library and I have one tatty but legible copy to lend. Should you wish to read the text on the internet or download it then you can find it here: http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0200021.txt and here http://www.questia.com/library/book/keep-the-aspidistra-flying-by-george-orwell.jsp
Thanks for doing this David. I rather like the idea of being a blog 'author', a first for me. I like the soothing 'etheral' theme :) Have ordered the book on amazon, as I thought the rest of the family might like to read it too. Happy to pass it on when I've read it. First question, what should you select when it says 'comment as' '? Sarah
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah. Glad you like it and I hope you are feeling better now. The 'comment as' thing allows you to select the identity you want. In my case my Google user name is 'southdownsway' so I have selected that. David
ReplyDeleteThe bookshop is exactly like the one in Black Books! Gordon Comstock has something of Bernard Black's belligerence and hostility too. Love that series.
ReplyDeleteI have finished the book. If anyone would like to borrow it, let me know. It has led me back to the Spirit Level, and I found this http://www.equalitytrust.org.uk/why/remedies which outlines some different ways to reduce income inequality.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, I thought this review was quite good as a starting point for our next discussion. I agree with the elegant and precise writing comment and the annoyingness of Gordon!
